To all at Mauri Oho,

I have been checking traps on the Makaroro river since the trapline was laid in July 2017. I have shared both the beauty of this mountain river and the “workings” of a kill trap line, with many people, from different walks of life.

It was a pleasure to accompany the crew from Mauri Oho (Ongaonga) on their first visits up the river. Everyone showed genuine enthusiasm for being in this environment, connecting with nature, and for getting the job done.

Good practice procedures are in place to pay attention to detail and to get a professional result. I was moved by the karakia given before entering this beautiful valley, and I wish them the best of luck with their vision for a better future for nature.
